    Tach problem

I purchased a Yamaha engine meter at the dealer. I wanted a tiny tach or pet tach but this is all I could get on the spot. I can't get it to rear right. I have the lead wrapped around the #1 coil boot 4-5 times. I can get a rpm reading when the engine starts, but it shows bogus numbers between 250-450 rpm while I know the idle should be more like 1200. If I rev the engine the tach goes to 0. What am I doing wrong here?

There is no configuration or buttons on the meter. There is a single lead you wrap 4-5 times around the coil, thats it.Click image for larger version.

Ok it seams to be reading half the engine rpm. Package says its for a 4 cycle engine.

Well I went it to the dealer and they let me try it on a FX and FZR. Both read the same as on my FZS, half the indicated RPM. I also tried it on a 1300R they ahd and it read twice the indicated RPM. I bought a TTO tach they had and it seems to work fine. I guess the Yamaha meter doesn't work right on some machines.
