    Can I swap a 750 into a 650 without changing anything else

Sorry if this is already posted somewhere but after doing searches I haven't found my answer. I have recently purchased a 92 SL 650 that needs a new motor and after looking around have found an abundance of 750's but few 650's. I see on here that the lower cases are the same and the jugs should just swap out but as the case I have is cracked on the upper half I just want to swap the whole thing. Can I use a newer 96 motor and swap it directly in using same CDI and adapting fuel and cooling or are there other things I need to do.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can do what you are suggesting, but if you want to make life easier for yourself, I would suggest maybe just fixing the 650 setup. 650 parts are everywhere on Ebay. No matter the year, any 650 ignition parts have to be used as a matched set, flywheel, stator and CDI. 650 ignition components are not compatible with any other models. A complete 650 ignition setup could be bolted to a 93-95 750 longblock or possibly a 95-97 780 longblock. Of course, the further you get away from the original setup, the more performance would be compromised. The static timing settings intended to be used to setup 650 ignition would not be the same as those needed on a 750 or 780 ignition. 650 ignition on a 750 or 780 engine might run, but certainly not to full output. As you have noted yourself, the cooling and fuel systems evolved considerably over those model years, you would certainly want to apply all of the relevant upgrades to match the fuel and cooling systems. There are even pump upgrades that could be applied to the 1992 hull if it still has the original pump setup. Considering the amount of resouces necessary to update the 650, I would suggest you would be better off fixing your 650 as stock, ride it, enjoy it, and then sell it, and buy something bigger if you want more performance. Changing engine, carb and igniton setups from original can become a real headache.
