Yes but this is not a trawler, it would need 300hp per diesel engine to get on plane and they weigh a ton. Literally a ton each. Then there is the 30-60 grand each and we just passed the value of the boat. Since this was meant to get up on plain and go and it only weighs 12 ton dry I think 800-1000 hp should get it moving about 35-40 mph wot and will cruise at 25 no problem. The stock 450 total original hp does 21 mph On the 2000 hour 60 year old MEL v8s. When I want fuel efficiency a merc deep kick outboard at say 100hp should be enough to do pull hull speed at 2gal per hour. That's 2-3 mpg and up to1000 miles. I can put it on the swim platform I want to build. Anyone who laughed would quickly stfu once the twin L series fire up.
Also diesel presents a new set of issues. Shaft size, prop type and size, exhaust tube diameter, fuel delivery.......

Today I asked every wood boat expert I know how to clean the old crap from the plank gaps. I was told only way was with hand tool. I figured out this in 5 min. The old guys were stunned and felt stupid when I told them this tool has been around for over 10 years at Home Depot. Imagine how they felt when I told them I also used a power calking gun to lay that thick ass sikaflex.

How is a 100hp outboard only using 2 gallons of fuel per hour?

You are not wot or even 50% throttle. The deep kick is a kick motor designed for torque. They have more reduction and a larger prop. The website claims 2 gal per hour at 3000 rpm. Also the term deep kick is a common term for any large outboard repurposed for moving a boat around like this.

it sounds like bs but when you consider a strait 6 cylinder Perkins 300hp diesel uses 2gal per hour at 2200 rpm under load....... And it has 6 times the displacement.

Very cool. Looking good. I do not miss doing what you are doing one bit. Refinishing the teak on the 42' Nova Golden Star is nothing like you are doing.

Thanks for explaining your diesel thoughts to me. I figured you had at least thought of it.

And, shucks! That's a lot of work you got done since you started this thread. Is the reason you're going old school on the paint due to nostalgia or other reasons? Also, since you're obviously not adverse to working smarter, nor harder, are you going to spray the paint on?

I went with an old style paint because they are impossible to replicate with modern products. The look and feel need to be old. I can't shoot it not in the slip, but I am going to role and tip it. That is a term for rolling the paint then using a brush to top it for a certain look.

The primer is going on. This will buy me a few weeks to get the paint and finish all the little details prior to final finish. I still need to remove a lot of trim pieces and so forth. I would have already removed them but things like that get lost and can't be replaced.

And finally the first coats of primer.
