You might check out Active Captain. It is run by "The Segals" who spend probably more than half the year living on and cruising their boat. They'll send you an e-mail every week with useful information. In the e-mail they will also alert you to some kind of special some manufacturer/marine store is having. Lots of stuff to explore about the "cruising" lifestyle.

Today I had some time and was on the water so I decided to do some more work on this thing. Currently the starboard side is stripped and now I am putting in a few screws. In this picture there are 1000 new screws and 1000 old ones. About 20,000+ new screws in the whole boat over the next year or so when I am done. Every one has to be filled and sanded prior to paint. This will really tighten up the old girl.

A older guy was telling how hard his cabinet making job was and I asked him if he ever worked on a wooden boat and he always no. After some pictures he was glad he was a cabinet maker. When I am done there will be 10,000 screws per 10 foot of boat. And there are 50 feet. So at least 50,000 screws +- 10,000

Very nice. There will always be something to work on with a wooden boat but it's going to be a thing of beauty when done.

I have a wooden electric RC model of that same boat. Nice to see the real thing.

Thanks for sharing and keep the progress pictures coming.

Tanks! I simply try to make a little progress every time I am here. When I replace the engines it will get expensive and frustrating. I want to put two L series 6.0l small blocks in her. So double the power basically. She needs 1000 hp to effectively hull ass. Hehe

There are correct ways and incorrect ways to do everything on a wooden boat and I don't do any of them totally right. You are suposed to use Si-bronze screws. I do use them, but only below the water line. Above I use Teflon coated brass, at $.02 a piece it's way cheaper than a $.50 Si-bronze screw and technically has the same rated life span and holding strength. I have to listen to all the old timers tell me how I am destroying a old woody but really? It would take $100k to replank this boat and that's the only right way to do it. My goal is to get her to last another 30 or 40 years and then let someone else have the pleasure if she is still worth it.

Mooving down the starboard side and anywhere there was rot or dammage there are dozens of layers of paint. After 4 or 5 rounds of stripper it still has paint to strip in those areas. I will be replacing 5 boards near the back at the transom totaling about 100 linear feet of planking. This is common in these old CC as they had no way to drain water from the deck and it just rots out. I will install a drain on deck later.

The traditional paint used is spar emamal. Z-spar is $100 a gallon . However rustoleum makes a marine spar enamal but only in 1qt sizes but at only $60 a gallon. The actual paint in the jug is made by interlux same as z-spar and rustoleum

Thanks again for helping out with the shipping on the ski. It got from Ct to Ca in 3 days. Left Monday and arrived Thursday. Better than posting a letter through USPS.

I should have the starboard side painted by Tuesday. It looks ready for paint but I still need to wash it with soap and water then calk the seams. Then I can paint.

Have you considered maybe changing over to diesel for more range? I know it wouldn't be cheap...

1961 Chris Craft conni 50' woody. A labor of passion, I think.

Beautiful boat, great progress so far. Subscribed.
