The latest I'm hearing on the local news is that there are 3 dead and the bodies are still in the theater. They're going crazy with this right now, so they may have misreported and one died at the hospital. Maybe.


The K9 hit three spots on the guy's car, so they're sending in the robot to break windows and open the trunk to see what the suspicious package is inside the car. But when they discovered it, they moved the news crews back another 50 yards or so and have evacuated the condominiums/apartment complex across the street.


They are advising people not to speculate on social media and also to stay away from the area as the investigation could take up to a week to complete.

Police Chief Jim Craft said three people are dead, including the shooter, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Acadian Ambulance reports that nine people were injured, and Craft said injuries range from non life-threatening to critical.

He said the shooter is a 58-year-old white man. The identity of the shooter is not being released at this time.

Gov. Bobby Jindal arrived at the scene just after 9:30 p.m.

A Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office unit and a Lafayette Police Department unit collided at the corner of Johnston Street and University Avenue while responding to the shooting. Capt. John Babin with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office said he is unsure of injuries, though a photo does show the Lafayette Police officer being carried away in a stretcher.

Corporate Media Links Louisiana Shooter to Tea Party

The Daily Beast and the corporate media are attempting to link the latest shooting to the Tea Party.

The man authorities named responsible for Thursday night’s shooting in a Louisiana movie theater is listed as a member of the Tea Party Nation and has a profile page on the group’s website.


John Russell Houser, described as a 59-year old man and “kind of drifter,” is said to have killed two people at the theater and then committed suicide when police responded to the shooting.


The profile page without activity will be used by the media to demonize the Tea Party and portray its members as gun-wielding psychopaths.

He was staying at the Motel 6 on University Avenue. Police searched his hotel room this morning and found wigs and other disguises.


Houser drove a 1995 blue Lincoln Continental with a switched license plate to the theater and parked outside the exit door. He intended on shooting then escaping, but police believe the rapid law enforcement response forced Houser back into the building, where he shot himself.

And here's our local station's contribution to reporting the facts and not attempting to create any type of bias. Yes, I know other sources have verified the information. But this is ridiculous "reporting."

In addition, a John Russell Houser from Phenix City, Alabama, is listed as a member of a group called the Tea Party Nation. However, KATC could not confirm if this John Russell Houser is one in[sic] the same with the shooter.

Oh, and from very close to the beginning, all of the local stations were making it very clear by saying it over and over that it was a white man doing the shooting.

The left sharpens its claws for gun control

Now that the Lafayette theater shooter has been identified as a white male who supported the Tea Party, it’s going to be open season on conservatives.



Every time a Muslim goes on a killing spree, the left asserts that any attempt to blame violent passages in the Koran or to ask Muslims to take collective responsibility is racist.


Fair enough, but that same standard is never applied when a tragedy can be exploited to impugn conservatives and the Second Amendment before the bodies are even cold.


It has now been established that 59-year-old John Russell Houser was a conservative radio guest who also had a profile on the Tea Party Nation website.


Houser also left racist comments on a different website, including one where he remarked, “The more hard working people with family values we have, the better.What we need to worry about is those who WILL NOT WORK and have no concept of family. They may largely be identified by race also.”


In the aftermath of the Boston bombings, prominent leftist news outlets like Salon.com insisted that Muslims shouldn’t apologize for the bloodshed. That same courtesy wasn’t extended to whites after the Charleston shooting. According to Salon, white America had to collectively “answer” for the massacre.

Similarly, following the slaying of four Marines last week by a radicalized Muslim, the left was petrified of even entertaining the notion that Islam played a role in the murders.


Within minutes of news breaking about the tragedy in Lafayette, liberals were calling for all white men to be stripped of their Second Amendment rights. The usual suspects – Piers Morgan prime amongst them are already out in full force exploiting the shooting to push gun control.


Never mind the fact that the movie theater in question, just like the Armed Forces recruiting center in Chattanooga, was a gun free zone where responsible people were barred from carrying firearms.


The left’s call for gun control was also strangely absent when at least 14 people were killed after an incredible 82 shootings over the July 4 weekend alone in Chicago.

Since most of those shootings were the work of black crime gangs, and couldn’t be blamed on Tea Party conservatives, we heard nothing but silence from so-called progressives.

UPDATE 10 AM: Georgia official says shooting suspect spent time in mental institution


He spent time in an East Alabama Mental Health Facility from 2008 to 2009, Russell County, Ga., Sheriff Heath Taylor tells KATC.


It's unclear whether he owned the gun he used in the shooting legally. He applied for a conceal-carry permit in 2006, but it was denied because of the arson charge, Taylor said.

Local businesswoman, musician among those dead in shooting

Jillian Johnson, 33, was one of the two people killed in last night's shooting at The Grand Theater, according to police.


She was the owner and founder of River Ranch boutique Red Arrow and Parish Ink, an apparel store with locations in River Ranch, Downtown Lafayette and New Orleans. Red Arrow was founded in 2012. Parish Ink was founded in 2010.


She also spent years as the lead singer of Lafayette all-female band, the Figs.

Friends say Breaux was a 'determined' student, always smiling


A Rosary will be prayed at 12 p.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Franklin in memory of Mayci Breaux and other victims of the Grand 16 shooting.


Breaux, 21, of Franklin, was one of two victims killed last night in a shooting at the Grand 16 in Lafayette. The gunman, 59-year-old John Russell Houser, also shot and killed 33-year-old Jillian Johnson and wounded nine other people before shooting himself.


Breaux was a radiologic technology student at LSU Eunice. She was taking summer classes and scheduled to take finals this week.


Her professor Rob Mclaughlin said the LSUE community is still in shock over the loss.


Friends and classmates said Breaux was a "determined" student who always had questions in class and was "always smiling."

Nine people ranging in age from their late teens to their late 60s were wounded, Craft said. At least one of those was in critical condition. Two were released from the hospital. The condition of the others was not immediately known.


"It just seems like he was kind of drifting along," Craft said. He had an uncle that once lived in Lafayette, but he died 35 years ago. "We don't know why he decided to stop and stay in Lafayette."


He said police saw something suspicious inside the shooter's car and that a bomb-sniffing dog "hit on three different locations" in the vehicle, "so out of an abundance of caution we brought in the bomb squad."

No explosives were found in the car or in the theater complex.
