06 RXP turns over but will not start

Have an 06 RXP that turns over but will not start. My understanding is that it was running fine and then died in middle of lake. The owner put in new spk plugs thinking that was the problem.

There are no codes from the inst panel...(do not have a BUDS or Candoo system). Get two beeps and if leave DESS key on will go to 4 beeps as expected.

I have verified:

- Battery is good (brought back and put it on charger overnight)

- All fuses are good/verified continuity-tested

- Fuel pump is working and get fuel pumping thru injectors.

- Have spark on all 3 ignition coils/ voltage & resistance tests show them within specs per manual.


In trying to track down problem I thought maybe the ski got flipped and the TOPS switch was stuck - I pulled and checked TOPS sensor even though there was no alert thinking it may be malfunctioning. When I tested it I got an intermittent 000 ohms reading and up to 10 ohms but never close to the 35 ohms in upright position.

Can the TOPS go bad w/o corresponding Pcode (1502) alert showing on inst panel?
If bad my understanding is ECU will stop the RXP from starting. Would it still allow fuel and spark to the cylinders?

Am I missing something else/component to verify in the system?

As the TOPS tested bad going to replace that and see if that fixes problem.

Any assistance/advise greatly appreciated...

Does it turn over easily with no strange noises? You could have a dropped valve and/or broken chain. I would pull the valve cover and check the chain and definitely also test compression too.

seen cam or crank angle sensor wires corrode and give high resistance readings. check resistance continuity from ecu pins to sensor plugs. when these go, symptoms are similar with no codes at all.

Did not have a compression tester with me when I went out to the house... will be doing that on Monday. I did not test the CPS yet - but will review shop manual again for the process/ verify conditions of CPS wiring..

When my ski dropped/broke a valve, it did that exactly ... no big noise, no smoke, just died. I had no idea what happened until I pulled the spark plugs and one was smashed in. Also if a chain breaks, it will do the exact same thing ...

The compression test will show if one cylinder has been damaged.

Yes I would agree that it would be odd... unfortunately I do not have any more information to go on, as the owner found out two days later from his son that the RXP "just stopped working" in the middle of the lake.

I will be back out at the dock lift tomorrow to check on a few more items..including compression check/fuel injector pressure/ etc...

I'd put a $20 on <black>/timing chain

should be pretty obvious from the cranking sounds that the chain has gone kaput.

Ive heard this before from my son ....... yeah dad I don't know what happened I was just cruising and it stopped ,,, when latter you hear , he was WOT for like 10minutes before it went BOOM ...
