Not getting advertised speeds with R&D kit
Hello Guys,
I would like to take this opportunity to discuss my experience with a Stage 1 kit from R & D for my 2014 GTX Limited.
I was not confident in doing the install so I had my dealer do the kit for me. He recommended the Riva Power filter kit and the surge protector kit from R & D.
I have to confess I was looking to the upgrades more than my son was for whom I claim to have bought the ski for. I got the ski back and my son and I found the acceleration to have improved but the RPM’s were only increased by about 40. The top speed went from 69 mph to 70 mph. Needless to say I was very disappointed having spent $2,800 between parts and labor. My dealer did what he was paid to do and R & D provided me with the parts to do the job. I was stumped. I called and spoke to Glen from R & D. He was very polite and concerned. I did some research and told him that Jerry Greenhulk recommended a different pitch than what is offered on the stage one kit. Greenhulk recommends a 15/19 or 15/20 and R & D sells a 15/22. Greenhulk specifically states the pitch is too steep to allow for the higher rpm’s if you use the 15/22. Glen told me that he would pay for the shipping back to R & D and he would repitch the prop for me. He sent it back and to us and only got another 50 rpm’s the whole time the dealer was charging me for the reinstall and bay tests etc. I called Glen again and he suggested I remove his cone and put the stock one back on. We had tried all of the washer options on his cone with very small increases in RPM’s. We are now getting 8400 rpms’s with a top speed of 73 mph with a 165 lb. rider and a ½ tank of fuel. I have tried 3 different gas stations as well because Glen said that if the gas is not up to par performance would suffer. I have now have spent over $3500 for a 4 mph increase. R & D claims I should be at 75-76 mph without the cone and sponson kit (it was not in stock). Jerry from Greenhulk was very quick to respond and was informative.
Where did I go wrong? Is there anything I can do with my current situation to get what R & D claims I should be getting?
Thanks,

Hi buddy - I can feel with you. I am at the absolutely same point like you - with a totally different way of tuning.
This is really funny - it is all you describe rpm / mph / impeller exactly the same in my case (RXT-Xas 260 Model 2014).
I will not overtake your thread and I will not describe my mods but.....
1. Your Impeller that you try first (15/22) is much too big thats absolutely clear! Not worth to try.
2. Remove the cone was a good advice (same in my case).
You can get the cone on, later, when everything is perfekt running.
Than you can see, what the cone do, but this is the last thing you want to know.
3. Your revs now at 8400rpm. Thats what R&D stage 1 should be.
4. As long as you get 8400rpm you can play with some different impellers
5. You are not logging the engine data, you must stay with R&D and their advice!
73mph is not so bad!
To what measure is your Impeller re-pitched from R&D?
You have get back your 15/22 re-pitched or you get a different Impeller back?
So and my last thing I would point on, is this GPS-Limiter.
Can we be sure that Seadoo have not changed the GPS-Limiter technique in the 2014er Models?
...and it is still active?
And sorry for my english - it is still difficult for me to find the right words.

Hello,
Thanks for your response, your English is a lot better than many Americans with whom I speak to daily. I believe the RPM's are set by the new programming. 73 mph is good but not what I signed on for. If I was told the kit with the labor at $2800 was going to get me 73 mph, I could have spent the extra $800 for a goal of 75 mph. It just doesn't seem fair to spend all of the extra funds and still not have what is advertised. I weigh 275 lbs and I have gotten the ski to 71 mph with 8050 RPM's in salt water. I would never expect the advertised performance at my weight. I hope they aren't using horse jockeys to test these performance mods. I was told by Glen that he pitched my 15/22 to a 15/19. I would love to see 75 mph.
Thanks again,

Steve are these gps or dash speeds ? Also buying kits imo are a waste of money . I met up with a guy with a gtx this weekend who had a "riva stage 4" with some big et blower " and my stock vtech tune only ski was side by side . Did you even reflash the ski ? If not just scom
and other bolt ons don't expect the 75 they claim

Your ski a 215 or 260hp? Are you running a tune? Please give us more details on what was included in this stage 1 kit.

If you are chasing MPH's, you better go ahead and tell your doc to put you on high blood pressure medicine. If you are already on it, increase your dosage.

The ski is a 260 with 30 hours on it. The computer was sent to R & D as per the directions on the R & D website. The ad states the numbers that I quoted earlier. Is anyone getting the advertised numbers? Yes, I am on blood pressure medicine and its aggravating when you expect to get something you paid for and it doesn't pan out. The claim is an 8 mile increase and I got 4. These numbers are coming off the speedo of the ski but my dealer hooked up a GPS with a tachometer and got the numbers reflected on the ski. If the ski read 69 on the Ski speedo and 73 after the upgrade I would imagine even if the total numbers are off the increases should be relatively accurate.

I'm running the same tune. The speeds they advertise are probly in the winter yielding higher rpm, lower IAT's, and better results. With the mods you have above 73 seems about right in the summer heat. If you want more get a 4"intake, remove the flame arrestor inside intake manifold and dial in the right pitch prop to get you at 8300rpm. I run a 14/18 pitch and spin mine to 8600. Depending on how hot your weather is I would go 14/19 14/20 on your prop. At 8300 you should see your 74-76 easy.
