    thru hull problems

    so I have a slt 780 96, had water leaking in through the thru hull bearing, replaced that noticed scarring on the drive shaft, second time I went out it was leaking again first time it didn't, leaking in the same spot, could the scraed shaft be the cause of the leak again from the same spot? and if so do the thru hull bearing seal needs to be replaced again?

    How bad is the scaring on the driveshaft? Can you feel it, snag it with your fingernail? Is it lengthwise with the shaft or circular?

    Any imperfection in the area where the seal rides on the driveshaft could cause a leak. Often times, the spot where the seals ride wear marks into the driveshaft over time. So folks commonly trim the big hose that attaches the Through-hull carrier to the hull with so the carrier rides just a tad (talking 1/8" here) further rearward on the shaft... in smoother spots for the seals to get a better seal.

    How snug is your Through-hull carrier riding on the driveshaft? There is an internal bushing that keeps the carrier centered on the driveshaft. If this is badly worn... the carrier can bounce around on the shaft... making it much harder for the seals to stay connected/sealed on the shaft.

    Are you pumping grease into the carrier after installation?

    Lastly... just below the carrier and driveshaft on the hull is the spot where the speedo pitot tube connects (clear small hose). This can come off the fitting or if not secured it can often rub against the spinning engine coupler and wear a hole in it (happened on my SLT). It will then just let water pizz into your hull... and it can easily look like a leaking Through-hull carrier too since it's just below it.
