5-Year-Old Girl Killed by Jumping Sturgeon

Very sad, we have seen reports of people being accidentally injured by these fish for years, now this tragedy; if you boat or use a PWC on the Suwannee River be extra careful...

A 5-year-old girl was killed and her mother and brother were injured by a leaping sturgeon while boating with their family on the Suwannee River.

The encounter happened Thursday evening at 8:47 p.m. Jaylon Rippy died after a sturgeon struck her and her family near Fanning Springs by Joe Anderson boat ramp. Her mother and her brother were also injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time,” said Maj. Andy Krause, regional commander at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in Lake City. “This is a terrible tragedy.”

This is the first fatality that has been recorded from a sturgeon strike on the Suwannee River. Other boaters have been injured from the jumping sturgeon in the past.

Had this happen to me a few years ago at our Polaris group get together on Lake St Clair. The Go Pro camera makes it look a lot farther away than actual. I bet this was only 20 to 30 feet in front of me at most.

This is sad news.


I was driving the keys the other day, i normally ride sideways so I can watch whast behind me. I drove by a normal spot I always go through, except this time a 4 foot shark jumped out of the water no joke 10 feet behind my ski, pretty much right over my wake. If i had been there .003 seconds sooner, there is no doubt he and I would have collided. At 30mph that would not have been good. I hit a butter fly once on my bike at 60...felt like I got kicked in the chest
