Next 96 780SLT gets some attention

I started into this ski today after doing an island activation (amateur radio).

HOLY COW THE GUY WHO HAD THIS THING WAS THE KING OF RUBE-GOLDBERG FIXES!!!

So the relay went out in the CDI, he just adds an external starter relay.

I go to swap out the battery and realize the CDI is LOOSE!

No wait, it gets better, the CDI is not a SLT780 CDI, it is a SLX as near as I can tell, cause it has no bolt holes to mount in the SLT.

I go grab the spare CDI out of my first parts ski (kiss) and realize he has used silicone sealant and the compression arm is gone for the wiring bulbs.

Open up the CDI and there is no gasket (why bother with the silicone?!?!?!).

On the side compression piece there is a wood screw run into the bolt hole and sealed with more silicone. Again the donor CDI fixes the problem.

Replace the CDI back half with mine from the SLT and button it all back up.

The wash looks great on this ski, so I am going to put it in for at least next weekend and then I may yank it and undo the crazy electrical stuff.

I had this ski in the lake on Friday...it's psychotic!

The wash pattern looks pretty rich, and that is mostly how it feels at WOT, but then every now and then it will spaz out to 6300+

If I go full throttle from idle it will go strong for about 20-30 seconds and then falls off.

I am guessing bad fuel (but I see no water in the trap) or maybe a fuel supply problem. This ski has an after-market pump in it, it's similar to the triple output the SLTs have stock, but not blue and not mounted to the hull...so that is my most likely suspect at the moment.

I am sending some jugs off to Watcon this week and will probably go ahead and get carb kits and a fuel pump rebuild kit for this ski.

Careful if it is back and forth on the RPM. I had this issue with an SLX and melted a piston due to lean burn. It happened too fast. Had to up the jets to 115s to get it to balance out. Do some plug chops while on the water. They will tell you if things are going south well before the wash pattern will....

It's coming apart for diagnosis...no longer on the water.
