another missing intake grate on rxp
i searched for a post similar to my issue, but found that I might have a slightly better scenario
My intake grate is missing, the front bolt threads are still there, the center bolt in the back is still there, but the two outer threads are missing. The plastic pieces or small tubes that would have those threads inside are there but the threads were torn out. Nothing else seems wrong.
Take a look at the pictures.
Can I order the outer back threads somehow and epoxy them back in? Do you think that the center bolt in the back is enough to keep the grate on? I had a riva toploader grate on there, which had a tendency to pull down on the front of the grate. If I put the stock one back on again, in theory there would not be nearly the downforce as the toploader right?
This ski has over 400 hours on it, and it runs spot on, although the rpm's are down to 7800 because there is no grate on there lol. I just dont want to put any money into it anymore.
What would you suggest I do?

Jeff you do not need a new shoe unless it is cracked... When I get home in the morning I will post pics of a fix that will be 100 times stronger then the OEM setup by using what you have already... You will need the two brass inserts, some epoxy, and a couple of bolts... Along with a new intake grate... This is a rather easy and cheap fix minus the cost of the intake rate... Like I said I will post pics in the morning when I get home from work

What about a girdle kit for RXP? Use to be in the store but I don't see them anymore.

If it's not cracked or really warped then you can either use a girdle kit of aggressively threaded brass inserts. This happens when the grate is not properly aligned and sealed and water pressure builds up under the rear of the grate snapping it off.

Jeff,
Heres what we do here in Chicago..
1.) We take the center out of the intake grate...
2.) We then countersink the center bolt hole to fit the new bolt..
(Stainless Steel 3/8ths machine head bolt)
3.)Once the bolt sits into the grate flush we then drill and tap the center tab to fit the bolt.
(tap to bolt thread size)
4.) once the tab and grate are drilled, tapped and counter sunk we then take and get a new, longer bolt for the front
(Roughly 1 1/2 to 2 inches longer)Bolt the grate up as usual but then go up top and use a flat washer and nylon lock nut on top of the new longer bolt up front...This will help from it being pulled out of the front as the machine head bolt now has bigger threads to bite plus a flanged head to help keep the grate from pulling..We have not had any issues with this setup as it has been run on many 80+ MPH skis with no issue...I suggest putting the 2 outer bolts in for a little extra side support..With the bigger flanged bolt installed it now takes most of the pressure off the side bolts..
For a mear $2.00 for the bolt,$2.00 for new brass inserts and $8.00 for epoxy you can do this setup failry cheap and it will definatly out do a pump shoe replacement job.....And be 100 times stronger than a new pump shoes threads/inserts....Last edited by Snoman; 06-25-2015 at 10:05 AM.

Personally I've never installed one. I know a couple forum members who have and advise on them for the RXP brass insert pullout issue. Sno can advise what he believes will work best for you. I just tossed the idea out as an option and he can comment further.
