    Gelcoat Cracks??...

    Was Cleaning up some oxidation on the ski today when i noticed some hairline cracks. Looks like gel coat cracks.

    Wondering anyone can shed some insight on this for me. From what i read that this happens alot to gel coats..


    Is this what this is... There in a few places.

    I had these on my '06 Rxp just after 17 hrs of run time since new . And you probably will see more gel coat cracks over time

    Not uncommon ... usually not cause for concern unless they are directly under the gas tank, more on the bottom of the hull. Those can sometimes cause delamination if they get bad enough. Not a lot you can do to the gelcoat until/unless it gets bad and comes off ... keep an eye on it, especially under the hull, but otherwise ride and have fun.

    Being on the side like that and direction of the stress pattern I'm inclined to think it took a pretty hard whack at the dock? I've seen stress cracks in my own shit and usually they're consistent with oops's I remember. The common places, non oops's, are the tunnel/pump area. Least from what I've seen.

    I had them on the rear transom, and rear vertical part of the hull under bumper strip. Looked like crazing in glaze, spiderweb not straight lines. Comments from forum said they are even present on new skis straight out of crate

    Some even mentioned stress caused from IBR brake from high speed use?

    But as JPT posted, BRP doesn't cover these type of gelcoat cracks under warranty, suggesting they are 'normal' with use.

    Mine never worsened, so I'd ignore but keep an eye on them, especially below the waterline (de-lamination as mentioned).

    Ahh a sense of relief...!

    For now I'll just keep an eye on them.

    The solution would be to make carbon fiber hulls.
    It would save a lot of weight and gain in strength.

    Would look super stealth and cool too. Can you imagine the cost though, shit it would put at least $10k on the retail!
