Angry Noise coming from timing chain

I finally took my ski out for the first time this season and I noticed a ticking noise, coming from what I believed to be an exhaust manifold leak... I went home - tightened all bolts, clamps and went back out last night. Once again I hear what sounded like an exhaust leak (the ski ran fine but there was definitely a noise present). When I got back home I removed the valve cover and cranked the engine. Without it running, and with the valve cover off you can hear something slapping the timing chain I believe... Has anyone had this issue? I saw a few threads, but it always turned out to be some other issue... I would need some direction because I really do not want to have this turn into a bigger issue... Thanks

Some of the motorcycles do that when the auto cam chain adjuster is failing.
