Could I, Should I flush/ Back flush IC?

Picked up something in my impeller the other day that I could not get out.. I tried limping to shore but it was shallow quite a way out and kicked up some sand... I was wondering if I could or should flush out the IC? are the passages big enough to allow sand through? Will normal usage just clear it out? I have thought of installing strainer but haven't done so yet

there will always be some sand in the IC with out a strainer
and the bigger stuff gets stuck in the fins
the "screen" in the pickup is not even a screen, its just a piece of metal with holes
and they are bigger than you might think
