Question Top Off Fuel Before Trip?

Total rookie question but I have to ask it.

I never top off my dirt bikes before a trip out to the woods, as they easily overflow...flooding the carb and leaking gas in my truck bed. However, they don't hold 15 gallons like the ski, either, so no big deal topping off on the trail.

I am assuming this doesn't come into play on a ski, so is it okay to top it off (a little less to allow for expansion) before I hit the boat ramp? I will be taking a couple jugs of gas, but would really like to ensure it's topped off before I hit the expensive marina pumps. With the environment in which a ski is used, I assume they are sealed up super tight and overflow issues won't arise, but wanted to ask to be sure.

I guess I could fuel up just before arriving at the lake, but I have a 'cheap' pure gas station 1 mile from the house and a 40 mile drive to where I'll be riding...

I fill mine right to the cap. When it clicks off, I removed the hose so I can see the fuel getting close to the cap. If you spill, it can damage the colored parts of your ski so be careful.

Not only do I fill up till I visually see gas top of neck, I even top-off the backside of the fuel cap

So how much more can you add when you top it off? About 1/2 a gallon?

Depends. Some gas stations are no on level ground (I don't mean front to back) and once I filled up at a pump that the ground was leaning down to the filler neck side. I was between 1/2 to 1 gallon less than if I had the filler neck angled higher than the right side of ski. Mostly due to the inability to burp the air out of tank.

BTW: The filler at the actual gas tank is forward/left.

Having said all this, if you only plan to ride 35-40 miles or less on water, don't worry the last drop.
