    Slx 1200 cdi

I picked up a 2k slx 1200 for peanuts. Guy said it would only do about 15mph in the water. I was thinking it had something to do with the empeller. The battery was dead so I hooked up another battery with jumper cables. I hadn't touched anything, just wanted a 12v supply to test the mfd. The next thing I know smoke is pouring out of the cdi so I disconnected the power. Somehow I was able to get circuit board removed from the black casing, must have been dumb luck. I found a hole burned threw the middle of the circuit board. Has anyone repaired one of these or do I need to find a used one.

    CDI is probably not repairable.

It is recommended to NOT use a jumper pack on Polaris watercraft as sometimes the result is fried electronics, as you have now discovered.

No jumper pack here, I had removed the battery to charge it. I have a used car battery that's still good so used jumper cables to connect to the leads inside the hull. I have a feeling that something was already on the fritz with the cdi before I got it. The guy I bought it from told me he was having problems at the end of last season. When I went to charge the battery it was drained to the point it only was putting out about 1/2 a volt.
Does anyone know where I can get a cdi for a reasonable price? I'm not spending $4-600 on one or an update kit. A local guy has one for a 1050 and wants $200, but I'd rather get one out of a 1200.

No need for an update kit. You already have the updated stator. You could go new through SBT for 399 or try and find used. Although those of us with extra CDIs arent too anxious to part with them.

Just to be clear, connecting any external battery using cables, clamps or jumper cables is all really the same thing. The only 'safe' way to start and run these engines is using a properly installed watercraft size battery.

Yes, you can sometimes get away with hooking up something 'temporary' but every so often an unwanted side effect is the electronics inside the watercraft are damaged. When this happens it happens without warning and likely without any external indication that you have just damaged something. Might not even have a contact spark when the battery is hooked up. Just a report sometime later that the 'CDI is no longer functioning' or 'voltage regulator no longer working'.

There's a couple pics of the cdi. There's was a problem long before I hooked up power for literally 10-15 seconds. Fiberglass doesn't burn like this in that amount of time. Click image for larger version.

ya there's no repairing that one.

Ok ok so if I get a new/used cdi do I have to check timing? I read this someplace but don't remember where.

You want to check timing yes. Hopefully you get lucky and it doesn't change.
