    transom plate boltes

    The two intake grate bolt holes in my transom stripped would it safe to heli coil them or do I need to replace the transom plate thanks for any info

    i would trust time serts better. Do not try to fix if the hole areas have any cracks would be safer to replace.

    I had a friend strip his out. He tapped the old bolt holes to 12mm. I found some stainless steel low profile head allen bolts in 12 mm thread size that fit the intake grate prefectly at Mc Masters-Carr online. It has been tested several times on a 88 mph Fzr with out any problems so far. Tommy Jordan

    I coiled one of mine. No issues and torqued to spec just fine. Rode a whole season with no issues.

    I'm doing about 70 on my VXS so I can't tell you for sure if 88 is OK however I feel that if the coil I used pulls out then the factor bolt/threads would have too. I used red lock tight on the coil to hold it in and installed two of them for maximum thread contact and bolt grip. Not sure if the coil will cause corrosion in the salt water so I used a dab of anti seize on the bolt but don't plan to take the grate off anytime soon. The coil I used looked like stainless.

    Did the bolts pull thru? Or the threads just stripped from over tightening?

    The grate broke an the treads in the bolt holes are stripped
