A 29-year-old man trying to reattach a boat and trailer to his SUV died when another vehicle crashed into the trailer on a busy Macomb County road.
The wife of the Clinton Township man, identified as William John Rainey III, witnessed the crash Wednesday evening around 6:30 on Metro Parkway in Harrison Township.
The man was heading eastbound on Metropolitan Parkway just east of Lanse Creuse Street in his 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer when the boat trailer became disconnected from the vehicle, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.
He stopped in the left lane on Metropolitan Parkway and the couple exited the vehicle to reattach the boat trailer to the SUV.


The sheriff's office said a 21-year-old Harrison Township man driving a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox didn't see that the trailer had stopped and struck the rear of the trailer, causing the boat to dislodge and pin the driver of the Trailblazer underneath the boat.
The Equinox caught fire after the collision and the driver of the Trailblazer was transported to the McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mt. Clemens where he was pronounced dead.
