You will not lose or gain by going to a gutted stock box or an aftermarket riva. All you will gain is

If you gut the water box and put a free flow it would be loud...

You have to cut the wall with the holes only.

I loved the growl of my stock waterbox that was completely gutted with rear exhaust on my FZR! I was thinking to do that to my FX, but trying to hold back on the mods and it is nice for a change to have a quiet ski. At least for a little while.

You dont have to cut the box open. Just use a hole saw with a 18inch extension. You get the grunt but its not loud at all with the free flow out the back. Just drill down the inlet whole with the extension. Also from what I remember DO NOT cut the vertical outlet pipe.....The water will not drain properly out the exhaust. It needs to be close to the bottom to suction out the water.
