Can you change a stator on a GTX without pulling engine?

Bought this 2002 GTX 4tec with a bad timing chain and engine in pieces. Getting it together and running into a few problems.

It is not charging at all. I think the stator is bad - which I find kind of hard to believe as it seems it is not something that goes bad normally?? It has 74 hours on it..

Can I change it in the hull or do I have to pull engine back out?

Anybody have any experience with 4tec stators?? I am worried I will put another stator in it and still not charge... Things I have checked: Both 30 amp fuses are good. I unplug the rectifier and check running ac voltage and get 3 different readings on each wire (8 volts to 18 volts ac - manual says 24 volts ac). I am no electrical genius - when I check the stator wires with ohm meter it goes into M (???) scale.. it is not reading .1 ohms to 1 ohm as manual says it should (sorry to sound like an idiot - never seen m scale.. have used ohm meter before).

Is it possible I did something wrong while installing engine??? I cleaned all grounds and everything looks ok. Engine does run decent on trailer...

Any help would be appreciated... wife and daughter want to use it and I keep saying next weekend, next weekend because I get one thing fixed and another problem presents itself

No but the battery is charged well and showing 12.8 volts while off and 12.7 volts while running. Neighbor has a newer RXT and it was 12.6 volts off and 13.4 volts idling.

Not sure how to check it?

I did most of the tests in this thread: http://www.greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=210291

    DC Voltage Test
    Proceed as follows:
    – Set multimeter to Vdc scale.
    – Connect multimeter to battery posts.
    – Start engine.
    TEST ENGINE SPEED VOLTAGE
5500 RPM Max. 15 Vdc -------------------- NO change in voltage - goes from 12.8 to 12.7 once its started

    STATOR
    Continuity Test
    Proceed as follows:
    – Disconnect the magneto wiring harness connector.
    smr05-016-008
    – Install the 3-pin magneto harness adapter
    (P/N 529 036 016) between unplugged connectors.
    529036016
    – Set multimeter to ohms.
    – Connect multimeter between YELLOW wires.
    TERMINAL RESISTANCE @
    20°C (69°F)
    1 and 2
    1 and 3
    2 and 3
    RESISTANCE @
    20°C (69°F)-0.1 - 1
    – Read resistance.
    %1;9
    – If any result is out of specification, replace stator.
    – Replug connectors properly ---------------------------------------- I am getting crazy readings .6 to 1.9 but it is auto ranging. The range is showing as 'm' ?? Sorry do not use ohm meter very often

    Insulation Test
    – Disconnect the magneto wiring harness connector.
    smr05-016-008
    – Install the 3-pin magneto harness adapter
    (P/N 529 036 016) to the magneto wiring harness.
    smr2005-016
    – Set multimeter to Vac scale.
    – Start engine.
    – Connect multimeter between YELLOW wires.
    TEST ENGINE
    SPEED TERMINAL VOLTAGE
    1 and 2
    3500 RPM 1 and 3
    2 and 3
    Approx. 25 Vac
    – Read voltage.
    – If voltage is lower than specification, replace
    stator.
    – Replug connectors properly. --------------------2002 manual says to unplug rectifier to do this test. With rectifier unplugged I get 11-18 volts AC. With rectifier plugged in its 12.4ish DC (probing the stator connector)

I'd bet the stator got dinged when the engine was apart.

or the wire is pinched in the cover

I was pretty careful putting on the pto cover - wanted it to not leak so was really paying attention. The stator and pto was in a box by itself - but I am not the one that took it apart.. who knows what could have happened..

I gues my big question is: am I testing this right? I hate to replace stator only to have it still not charge once I get it back together...

Looks like I might be able to pull stator cover/timing cover off while still in GTX?

usually the reg but if motor was just apart then possibly the stator got damaged, while you could do it pleace do yourself a massive favour and pull the motor out I guarantee it will be way faster, cleaner, and less likely to have issues!
