New motor, won't start
I have a 97 sltx 1050, I just put a new motor in. I upgraded the ign. system, rebuilt carbs, new fuel lines. Battery voltage is 11+ when cranking. I have checked everything by the manual with no problems found. The thing spins great but won't fire. I put a plug tester inline & the plugs fire. Need help.

Sounds like fuel. When i rebuilt the carbs on my GSX i reverse the supply and return fuel lines. Switched them and it fired right up.

Remove the flame arrestor cover and dribble a small amount of gasoline down each carb throat, less than a teaspoon each. Does it now fire up and run for a few seconds? If yes, there is a fuel delivery problem.
NOTE, do not lean over the open carburetors in case of backfire. Stand to the side as you attempt to start the engine.

Compression checked?
If compression is good in all cylinders (throttle held wide open during test) then perhaps the ignition timing is incorrect (flywheel woodruff key sheared) or the spark plug firing order is incorrect (wires on the wrong spark plugs).
Leave all spark plugs in the cylinder heads and verify you have a strong blue spark on each plug wire. Use a spare spark plug so the engine is cranking against compression and you can validate the strength of the actual spark.
Make sure there is no fuel fumes in the hull before doing this test.

Back to project after week off. Ck spark w/plugs in engine, very weak on all 3 cylinders, static timing still o.k. Compression ck-not good. 75 front 70 cen 70 pto. The firing order is 1-3-2 & and the crank is the same. I guess I need to return motor to get ckd out. I have sent back once, was told no problem, rings need to be run and seated.
