I used two zinc plated quick links from home depot. Little more permanent than the zip ties I had on there.

On my last trailer I riveted it right onto the frame of the trailer. Cheap, ez and not likely to be stolen. No way its going anywhere.

Did a search before posting a new thread but was shocked this is one of the newest plate holder threads. I really would have liked "eventually" to be longer than the 8th trip on the trailer. Went to the river yesterday only to find the ramp looked like you could walk on water with all the debris in it. While watching trees float down the river notice there wasn't a plate on the rear of the trailer.

I installed a stainless steel hinge and aluminum backing plate. Probably overbuilt, but it and the attached plate are still on the trailer.

On some other trailers I have bolted the plate directly to the rear cross frame. The problem is that you need to find a plate location that wonít snag your foot while climbing on and off, and the license plate edges wonít be near the hull during loading and unloading.

just wondering what size of earth magnets and mounting cups? I want to make sure the magnetic holding power isnt too strong yet enough to keep the licence plate in place when hinged in the upright position.

Magnet is about 1 inch diameter IIRC. Strong retention when flipped up against the magnet, takes a good solid push to move it down and away from the magnet.

Sometimes * I forget to flip it back down, and the magnet will hold it up there for as many miles as I can drive.

    * So I put a 3M reflective strip on the front face, which I can see (sort of) from my driverís mirror. I try to remember to check it before I pull away.

Just remember if you tow at night, you'll need to have the license plate lighted.
