I've never understood any law that prohibits having the lights to begin with. I understand being cited for running past sundown which would be a clear violation, but just having the lights installed...? Makes no sense - actually, I'd like to see the USCG regs (or state for that manner) that actually prohibit attachment/hull alteration/installation of navigation lights.

EDIT: Maybe we should have an annual PM PWC tour in Delaware?

    TITLE 23
    Navigation and Waters
    CHAPTER 22. BOATING SAFETY

    Subchapter II. Personal Watercraft
    ...
    (b) No person shall operate a personal watercraft at any time between sunset and sunrise and at times of restricted visibility unless the personal watercraft is equipped with navigation lights.

I see Alabama has similar if not the same at the Feds. I wish every state was that easy to read luckily I am relatively skilled in legalese. Thanks for the info

Atty? Who takes precedent - state or fed law (USCG Regs)? I was always told that a state reg is the one to follow provided it doesn't undo the intent of a fed law/reg...

I'd guess it would depend in which water you were operating, state or federal.

You are correct sir. The Feds can make laws we are required to follow however, individual states can make laws that are more stringent. In any state controlled waterways, you must abide by state law.
