Seems gimmicky, but would it stay on at speed? Or, if in inclement weather, how would you attach it if covered up? I'm basing these questions on my experience that I'm more apt to have my VHF when cold weather riding: light or no marine traffic versus the summer time when everyone is on the water.

If it can't reasonably stay in place at speed, what's the point of having a headset you have to put on when you stop vs. picking up the radio itself? Just some thoughts off the top of my headset...

If you don't mind, post up your final purchase decision and let us know your experience w/it.

Yes I will post what we do and our experience with whatever we buy. Ideally I think would be a $250 -300 VHF but trying not to do that. Reason I need 2 of whatever we buy.

Anybody used the HX300 sounds like a good compromise. Price v equipment.

For the ultimate in safety you really need one with GPS/DSC and is the highest wattage.
For a handheld this one gets great reviews on The Hull Truth boating site:

What's great is you can register a buddy's MMSI number and they can yours. If you get a "missed" call from a saved buddy it will log it and you can review it.
