I had originally posted in the Yamaha section on buying used for the family


Now I might look at a 1997 GTI from the south Jersey area so probably lots of salt water use.

For the older SD's I've learned,

Check gray Tempo fuel lines, check compression, don't jump start with car running, rotary valve seal, crank oil, etc.

Questions, will a compression check also reveal a failing rotary valve seal? If not how do I check this? Oil residue in the exhaust?

How's the 97 GTI durability-wise? 717 only had 1 carb? MPEM troublesome? $1000 seem right with trailer and cover? I guess original engine. I'm hoping to see the ski this afternoon so any help would be appreciated.
