    Budget Valve Spring Compressor

I don't know what everyone else uses to compress the valve springs on their 4-TEC engines, but I had been using a cutout socket and a standard valve spring compressor. It didn't work worth a damn; wanted to tip on me, took two hands to hold it steady, not much clearance to put the keepers on, etc.

This morning I decided to make a proper one, using the OEM one as a model. I took a piece of 1 1/4" bar stock, turned a cup in the lathe with clearance hole of 5/8", then turned an end piece of of the bar stock with a 3/8' internal hole. Then I cut two pieces of 1/4" square tool steel, and welded it together with TIG. (tool steel doesn't weld worth a damn, so I used stainless filler...)

I then took a cheap 4.99 Harbor Freight clamp, knocked off the swivel, removed the screw and turned the end down in the lathe to fit the cup assembly. I simply taped a large nut on the fixed end using electrical tape so it won't scratch the valve. It fits into the dimple on the valve head.

Pictures show the finished tool. It works really great! Took me about an hour all said and done. I don't know why I didn't do this earlier...
