over heated ignition??

ski occasionally backfires on trailer.in the water it ran great 6600 rpm .after about 5 minutes it died.like the ignition was turned off.would crank and try to start or woyld start but run on one or two cylinders.was very hard to get started.after it sat for 5-10 mintues i got it started.was running rough,then it started running fine for another 1-2 minutes,then died.any body had something JUST like this??its electrical for sure.

that sucks intermittent electrical problems are the worst well we are obviously dealing with spark and spark timing

so what controls spark
cdi
pickups
coils
wires
plugs
wiring

lets start small
plugs- doubt it but it never hurts to replace them
wires- same thing pretty hard for those to go bad
coils- ohm em out but be careful because once coils begin to warm up they can open up and lose their field
pick ups- make sure you're getting a good pulse
cdi- good luck on that one when you find a way to test those you'll be a rich man bout the most you can do is replace it with a know working unit

Wiring- these skis are old stuff corrodes could have a loose wire do a continuity check on each wire jiggle them around to be sure i also like to group the battery into the wiring category make sure the battery is charging and you have a good charge

like i said electrical gremlins are a pain
i may be a newb to skis but i've probably forgotten more about internal combustion engines than most people will ever know

i'm leaning towards the coil myself.can pull the one off the pro to check but i'll have to swap around the cdi's

My money would be on the POS stator...That thing IS the Achilles heel of the Domestic motors.

Ph2ocraft Al did like to fit the stator cover from the Ficht engines (any model?) to the domestic carburetor engines.

The Ficht stator cover has a cooling water jacket cast into the front face, and a horseshoe shaped cover plate. He felt it kept the stator and front crank bearing area cooler, which is probably true enough.

I have not compared them myself, but I think the Ficht stator cover is a direct bolt-on replacement for the stock stator cover. Then you just have to find a place to splice it into the cooling system for water feed and exit.

Note: If you install the Ficht stator cover, then it is important when winterizing to lift the nose of the ski up to better drain the stator cover. And the spliced in hoses need to not trap water - you want a self-draining hose layout. Once drained you can lower the hull as needed (although I just keep my own tipped upwards for the winter).

Edit: It seems that there are two different domestic flywheel housings with the water cooling feature, 1201911 (1999-2002 Ficht) and 1202574 (2003-2004 Ficht).

The stator water jacket cover part numbers are 5630981 (1999-2001), 5630981-329 (2002) and 5631431-329 (2003-2004).

Water jacket gasket is 5812011 (2000-2002) and 5812474 (2003-2004)

Not sure what the differences are between these versions.

From what I've seen you don't even need to swap the mag cover....the newer models have the same cover as the ffi engines....you can just bolt the cooling cover right on to it.
