You will never eliminate the risk of having problems out on the water. However there are lots of things that you can do to minimize it.

Maybe it is a vent for a lead acid battery? Quite possible the battery has been changed to a AGM, and therefore the vent isn’t needed. I just plugged mine and left it there.
