You can totally remove the head with the engine still in. It is actually fairly simple and once exhaust and intake manifolds are removed there is quite a bit of space to work.

Ya, I'm still thinking it sounds like a loose valve tick.

Put the cover back on. Start it up and hold a dowel rod or piece of PVC pipe to your ear. Touch the pipe to the engine in various places to see where it's the loudest.

I filled mine with grease as I was putting it back together. Once a year after that I add just one pump with my grease gun.
