Yes, definitely use a strap. They aren't that heavy duty but they do the job. After a couple years they can get brittle and break but they are cheap to replace.

Mine is blue. Some good clear should definitley help. Maybe that and curing it at a higher temp or something. I am not a paint guy at all.
