If you have the right Keihin carbs, you can add some real arm jerking acceleration
with a simple carb mod.

A few yrs of the 1050 came with CDK2 carbs with a mid-range circuit. If you drill

Or you could set the idle speed to '0' and leave it shut until the engine kicks, then crack the throttle.

Hard starting is the most common carburetor problem on all of the 2 stroke watercraft
brands. My definition of hard starting is nearly the same as the OP, and I used to...

Stock pop-off was 76psi, I don't recall it being too high. I am certain
it ran just fine for a long time on that pop-off.

So what has changed?

That is a misconception. The seat doesn't open because of pop-off pressure.
It opens because atmospheric pressure pushes it open, with help from manifold
and or ported vacuum. That is why vacuum...

Your engine was just loaded up, so the goop is just water and gas that
came out of the exhaust ports.

Whatever you do, don't use starting fluid on that ski.

Were those the 1050 carbs that were equipped with 3 jets?
(the 3rd jet was a mid-range circuit) If so they are easily modified
for more acceleration.

That is very common, and pop-off is not the problem. Your needle and seat
is not opening! You have a vacuum leak or the engine has a problem with
producing manifold vacuum.

A 44 might solve...

Is it still oil injected?

Why port a 785? The 720 and 785 have race porting stock!

What would Klemm do? widen the exhaust port, raise the rear boost port,
and make the cylinders appear as though Klemm did a lot of porting...
