You're right, I guess it's the luck of the draw. I've never caught anything in my SS rings but I've had to replace the plastic ones due to misc trash and cavitation burns.

Yeah, I was just mentioning that to the OP... wasn't sure if he has upgraded yet. I myself use a SS ring. I wouldn't go back. I figure if I suck up a rock, my impellar is most likely screwed anyways...

I was bored....LOL.

I've been thinking about doing that in our bodyshop for customers. I'm going to try it on mine and see how it works. I'll let ya'll know if it works.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can tell you better but I remember back in the day, stainless steel rings worked better than the factory plastic. Less ability to give? Would that help or...
